The Great Gatsby
The film was mirroring the norms of the late 20’s, early 30’s. This
included fashion. Women wore silk and lots of jewelry and men wore suits that
are very much of a base of the ones men were today. That particular type of
clothing was a big part of the main character- Mr Gatsby. It also in my opinion
had an impact when it came to the characters’ presentation because we automatically
assumed what type of a man he was, judging by what kind of clothing he was
wearing. He looked mysterious, smart and intelligent. Which was enough to
create an impression straight away.
A character called Daisy, who is one of the main characters in the film and has a deeper connection with Mr Gatsby, looks significantly different from everybody else. All the other women have black, sleek hair whereas her hair is blond and very natural looking making the whole look very gentle and feminine. Her make up has also been done in a very subtle way, emphasizing her exceptional character in the film. In my opinion this character definitely created the impression that women do not have to wear tons of make up to stand out and be fashionable as well as look (and feel) classy.
All the costumes are of a very high quality and a big part of the
film. They were designed by an Australian costume and production designer
Catherine Martin, who was nominated for the best costume designer award. All
the wigs were done by Kylie Clarke, who I think did a great job because she
made all the hairstyles look very elegant and classy, not cheap and fake.
The fashion in this film has been presented in a very elegant and
creative form. Even though the film has its own feel and everyone seems to look
‘the same’, all the artists have made sure every single person has something
different about them. Whether it is the hair, make up or a specific item of
clothing that only they wear.
The Skin I Live In
The genre of this film is Drama/Horror/Thriller. It is about a talented surgeon who
haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that is not
affected by anything that could possible damage it. There was a particular
piece of clothing that played a big part in the film (Pictured right). It was a
very tight fitted costume, which was supposed to make this specific character
more feminine. It almost came across as a hidden message that said ‘tight
clothing will make you look sexier and curvier’. This is very interesting
because around 2011, which is when this film came out, skinny jeans and
leggings started being very popular. A character called Vera who was also the
one wearing the costume, had very interesting make up. It was not too visible
and feminine (for example eyeliner and red lips) yet it still emphasized how
gentle and womanlike she was. Her cheekbones played a huge part as they made
her whole face look slim therefore ‘small and vulnerable’.
All the hair and make up work in my opinion had
been done to a very high standard because everything looks as natural as it
could and in place. The hair was done by Oscar Aramburu who specialises at
hairstyles for tv shows. All the prosthetic make up was done by Tamar Aviv who
was also a part of Harry Potter and Twilight and is a very respected make up
artist in the industry. This film is not very fashion or make up orientated but
it involves elements of it, which are quite interesting because of their
meaning i.e. the costume.

The second part of the Summer Project was to create a mood board that would reflect us in 5 years. It needed to answer questions such as where I want to live, who I would absolutely love to work with and what interests me about make up.
This is my mood board. I think it shows what kind of vision I have for my self as well as the things that I dream of doing and achieving. For example 'move to Los Angeles'. Which speaks for itself... "Passion for Fashion''. Which shows Fashion is definitely a big part of what I want to do and that I do take it into consideration while creating my make up looks. I would love to work at fashion shows because of the chaos and passion that you can smell in the air.
I have also looked at other peoples mood boards. This one is Jazz's who also wants to work in the Fashion industry as well as be a part of Broadway shows. Her mood board included loads of top models such as Cara Delavinge or Kate Moss. You can see she is very beauty orientated. She collected her research from magazines such as Vogue, Comsopolitan as well as the internet.
The next mood board was Megan's. Her inspiration was an instagram phenomen called Karla Powell who has also won one of the Illamasqua contests. She is very much into commercial and beauty make up. This has definitely been shown by all those face charts that she decided to include on her board.
This is a mood board done by Hannah. She was very much inspired by personal make up artists as that is who she would like to be in 5 years. She loves the work of Mario Testino who is a very well known Kim Kardashian's personal make up artist.
